Willow’s prediction came true. A few hours later, Sage was indeed sick of telling and retelling the story, but Lord Thistle and Lady Feronique demanded every detail. A company of guards had been sent out to Fallon Domani’s house, but Sage had little hope that they would find her father still there. As soon as he had healed enough to regain consciousness, he would be gone. The best they could do would be to bring home Dandelion and the other guards for burial.

Lord Thistle’s fury at this attempt on his daughter’s life had been deep and frightening. He had never looked at Sage before the way he did all through his questioning, as if it was all he could do not to strike her down where she stood. As if it was somehow all her fault, and this unbearable insult to his family’s honour would never have happened if he had not been so foolish all those years ago as to agree to take in an unwanted half-breed.

Lady Feronique, of course, was all but hysterical and, in the absence of Fallon Domani himself, all her shrill and bitter rage was directed at his daughter. In vain did Willow point out that Sage had actually saved her life. In vain did she beg for clemency.

No, her parents were agreed: Sage could have no place in their home or Realm any more. Willow shouted and even cried, which usually moved her father, at least, but tonight her pleas fell on deaf ears.

So it was that Sage was in her room, trying to decide what she should take with her into exile. Dandelion’s knife, of course—it had already proved its worth, and it was a link to the kind guard who’d taught her the skills that had allowed her to save Willow’s life, though sadly not his own. She thought he would have been proud of her, even though no one else seemed to appreciate what she’d done.

Not that she regretted it for a minute. She’d saved Willow, and that was the only thing that mattered. She threw a couple more books into her suitcase.

Willow came in, her green eyes full of storms. “What are you doing?”

“What does it look like? Packing.”

“Well, stop it. You can’t go.”

Sage paused, a shirt crumpled in her hands. “Will, I can’t stay. Your father said I have to be gone by daylight. If I don’t leave on my own he’ll have the guards kick me out.”

“I can talk him around.”

“Not by morning, you can’t.” Privately, Sage doubted it could be done at all, even given how easily Lord Thistle usually bent to his daughter’s wishes. “I’ll be fine. I’ll go to Autumn, or Summer, maybe.” Willow’s expression changed, and she looked down at the open suitcase. “What? I know that face.”

Willow sighed. “They won’t take you. No one will risk upsetting Father by taking in a girl he’s kicked out. Particularly when they find out what your father did.”

“I’m not my father.”

“I know that! I’m on your side, remember? But I doubt you’ll find a home anywhere in all the Realms.
